UNDRABĂ–RN

Went to see MARY ELLEN MARK speak at Ryerson last night. I was really enjoying her husband, Mark Bell's documentary about handicapped kids in Iceland called "Extraordinary Child/Undrabörn" when we got kicked out because of a fire alarm.

I also couldn't find the image I wanted to post from a series she did of kids on Hallowe'en in a shelter. Although, with ELTON JOHN in hot water for owning one of Nan Goldin's photos of two girls it's probably best not to post a picture of two kids in a bathtub together.

THIS AIN'T LUHRMANN'S MOULIN ROUGE

At first I thought the bravery of both the artist/performer and the other performer were more interesting than the actual subject matter, but as I watched I liked the idea of the difference between acceptable representations of sex. It's fun to dance around to "Like A Virgin" as a teen in your room, but why is the line drawn at actual sex? Why is there a disconnect between talking about sex openly and looking at sex openly?

Just the other day I was wondering how a sewing machine worked and today I happened to find the answer in this amazing little GIF of infinity.

I'M DISTURBING
My bosom-buddy Aleysa just sent me THIS article from Creativity Magazine out of the USA about the best production companies in America and a few abroad. The part about how deranged I am is at the very bottom. And they didn't even see the Mac's spot that was banned from being released...

That's right folks - JONATHAN GLAZER, DAVID FINCHER, and Graydon Sheppard all in an article together.

COUNT THE HEADBANDS!

Went to see DEVENDRA BANHART on Friday. I went alone but enjoyed myself as the incredibly attractive Devendra sang his skinny little heart out and assuaged over-zealoused dancers, security guards, and sitters. To quell a row that was happening at the front of the stage he invited all the people who wanted to dance up onto the stage. To my delight I saw CARLO, whom I haven't seen in ages. The thing is that even though I go to lots of shit alone I always know I'll run into someone, even when I don't want to. But this time I wanted to. Carlo is equally as attractive as Devendra and I thoroughly enjoyed the bear-hug/pinning against the wall he gave me when I caught his eye after the show.

The only bad part of that show was the truly hideous opening act - but I just went and got a drink and ran into Lesley and we played "Count the HEADBANDS ."

Then on Saturday, though I didn't think I'd be able to, I got to catch BASIA BULAT at her early evening CD Release Show at the Music Gallery. If you haven't already, please check her out. So beautiful.

Both Devendra and Basia have new albums out now (Devendra's is being released tomorrow) - please buy them for me. I'm broke.

Anyone going to Bat for Lashes on Friday? It will be headband central....

A SELF-HATING NARCISSIST

Are you a narcissist? I didn't know this, but narcissism is considered a psychological disorder. Well check me into a mental institute cause I loves me some me.

APPARENTLY, you only need to satisfy 5 of the following criteria in order to be considered a narcissist (like a true narcissist, I've marked the characteristics I possess for you to review - feel free to pipe up if I've left anything out, or leave your own test results in a comment!):

[x] has a grandiose sense of self-importance
[x] is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
[x] believes that he or she is "special" and unique and can only be understood by other special people
[x] requires excessive admiration
[x] strong sense of entitlement
[ ] takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends
[ ] lacks empathy (I only don't care about poor people. I'm KIDDING! God! CALM DOWN!)
[x] is often envious or believes others are envious of him or her
[x] arrogant affect

That's what happens when the school board labels you "gifted" and ships you off to a "special" school. See, there I go again! No humility!

THE 'FOOD FOR THOUGHT' GUY

So my dear friend Co-Co got up real urly this morning and got us tickets for the 9AM screening of CONTROL, the new movie by Anton Corbijn at the Toronto International Film Festival. Sweet of her, no?

So the movie was amazing and Anton Corbijn was there to introduce it and such forth. I won't go on about it, cause this is about the douchebag that I always end up sitting beside.

This particular breed of douche, as Cody so aptly called him, is the "Food-For-Thought Guy." I also like to call him the "Yes-That's-Right Guy." You see, what he does is this: Say, perhaps, there's an interesting or poignant bit of dialogue or something is shown to us. It's quite obvious that this line is poignant or the image is important. For example, a confused little Ian Curtis writing "I've always loved you, and I always will," or something like that. It's well delivered, and blatantly sentimental, but a nice moment nonetheless. I'm enjoying its emotional impact and the fucking a-hole beside me lets out a loud "Hm" to let everyone know he heard the line.

Shit like that fuckin kills me. And it was through the whole movie. Early on there was a shot of some books in Ian Curtis' adolescent bedroom. Dickhole says "Ahh" like he's the only other person who has heard of those books.

That's like the time I went to see Brokeback Mountain (I know, typical) and some stupid fags started saying "Ooooh gurl!" and laughing when Michelle "Marshmallow" Williams catches Jakey and Heath kissing.

Anyway, that's my two cents. I'm sure tons of people hate me.

THIS WEEK'S "WHATEVER HAPPENED TO...?"

STACI KEANAN - AKA NICOLE BRADFORD FROM "MY TWO DADS"

According to Wikipedia she hasn't been as pro-active as Mayim Bialik and is still trying to act:

She is most noted for her role "Nicole Bradford" in the TV series My Two Dads from 1987 to 1990, and as the feminist sidekick teenage girl "Dana Foster" the TV series Step by Step from 1991 to 1998. Before appearing on Step by Step, she appeared on the short-lived ABC sitcom Going Places. She also is sometimes credited as Stacy Keenan or Staci Love.Movies she has appeared in include Stolen Poem (2004), Nowhere (1997) (as Stacy Keenan), and Ski Hard (1995). She is credited as co-starring in "Hidden Secrets" (aka "A Simple Twist of Faith") as Rachel Wilson. It is a comedy/drama and is listed on IMDB as being completed as of March 7, 2006.

CLICK HERE to see the hollywood bimbette she has turned out to be, and make sure you watch the above video of the opening credits to see Giovanni Ribisi as a young lad.

Were the dads gay? I forget the premise. They look fuckin gay.

LAST NIGHT BJORK TOUCHED ME

No, really...I was at the airport waiting for my aunt to arrive from Spain. Watching the arrivals doors a woman came out and I said to my sister-in-law "Hey, there's Bjork, ha ha ha". Then my mouth dropped and I said "Hey, there's Bjork!".

She came out and stood about 10 feet away from me, occasionally brushing past me in her gorge travel outfit and techhnicolour sunglasses while I struggled to be cool. Apparently nobody was there to pick them up! Can you believe it? Someone's getting fired right about now. I was moments away from approaching and asking if she needed help or if I could get her a cab/car when they left. Poor Bjork! Stranded at the airport in Toronto 24 hours after playing V-fest in the UK.

Needless to say I had Bjork dreams all last night.

My brother took the pic above after I told him repeatedly not to and then covered my face after he did. To his credit he was very discreet but I was mad. But now I'm happy to have it ha ha.

I haven't been that excited since I denied Ashley Olsen at Urban Outfitters back in the day cause she didn't have photo ID to match the signature on her credit card. After about 30 seconds of her squirming cause she didn't bring any ID I smiled and said "I'm kidding, I know who you are." She didn't laugh.
