RAINER VIOLA

I just read a nice essay by BILL VIOLA in a book I got as a gift for subscribing to APERTURE.

I saw one of his films at LOUISIANA MUSEUM OF MODERN ART last year and have seen lots of work inspired by him (or at least similar to his) such as this one:

Anyway, he included a nice little thought by Rilke that I likied:

For the memories themselves are not important.
Only when they have changed into our very blood,
into glance and gesture, and are nameless, no
longer to be distinguished from ourselves - only
then can it happen that in some very rare hour
the first word of a poem arises in their midst and
goes forth from them.

THE PARK

I'm a bit in love with this song right now. It adds just the right amount of melodrama when you are yet again biking home drunk without a helmet, having given up on another night while praying that maybe something good will happen tomorrow.

I also am falling back in love with double exposure/layering images...

SHE'S NOT SO BIG WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE SCALE OF THE UNIVERSE

So the OBSERVABLE UNIVERSE is about 1026 metres wide. Strings (as in STRING THEORY) are theoretically 10-35 metres long. Let's compare:

OBSERVABLE UNIVERSE:

100000000000000000000000000.0 metres

STRINGS:

0.00000000000000000000000000000000001 metres

We humans are about 100.3 metres tall (unless you're THE HOTTEST ALIEN MIDGET FROM THE NECK UP).

So this means that things that are bigger than us (that we know about) get up to 1025.7 times bigger than us, and things that are smaller than us are up to 1034.7 times smaller than us. So, technically speaking, there is more that is smaller than us than there is that is bigger and I still can't tell if Oprah is pure evil or just a bitch.

MOVIES
Here's some junk I watched or re-watched recently followed by my one sentence review:

TIME OF THE WOLF - MICHAEL HANEKE - Terrifying.

THE PIANO TEACHER - MICHAEL HANEKE - I love your hair Isabelle Huppert.

DELIVER US FROM EVIL - AMY BERG - Manipulative and drawn-out documentary about a Catholic kiddy-diddler.

MYSTERIOUS SKIN - GREGG ARAKI - I rented this the same night I rented DELIVER US FROM EVIL and the lady at Film Buff said "these are pretty heavy duty movies" and I wondered if she was pressing the "Potential Fiddler" button underneath the counter to dispatch police to my home to scan my computer for evidence.

HOLY MOUNTAIN - ALEJANDRO JODOROWSKI - Suddenly Jaron makes sense.

TOTAL RECALL - PAUL VERHOEVEN - Blade Runner + Tank Girl + Sharon Stone = What's not to like?

HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE - HAYAO MIYAZAKI - I always hope/expect these movies to turn into YAOI.

SUICIDE CLUB - SION SONO - Japanese.

THIS IS ENGLAND - SHANE MEADOWS - British.

THE MIRROR - ANDREI TARKOVSKY - Russian.

WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE - TODD SOLONDZ - "Yo Weiner, you better get ready, 'cause at three o' clock today, I'm gonna RAPE you!" (Interesting trivia - Steve Rodgers, Dawn's crush, is now Daniel Meade on Ugly Betty and was also the football jock Joshua Jackson was having sex with in Cruel Intentions. Also, the working title for this movie was "Faggots and Retards")

SICKO - MICHAEL MOORE - Not my problem.
