ANTONY GORMLEY


When I went to London my friend and gracious host Tim took me to the opening of the ANTONY GORMLEY show at the HAYWARD GALLERY. The show was called BLIND LIGHT and it was a highlight of the trip.

The main attraction was a glass box about 25'x25' in the gallery that was filled with vaporized water and white light. We lined up around the box until we reached the entrance where they allowed 25 people in at a time. You could barely see beyond your hand but could hear everyone else in the box. It felt like you were on top of a mountain in a deep fog. It was bright and a bit difficult to breathe. I got lost in the middle and nearly bumped into a few people. Here is a little video I took inside (though I was trying to be stealth about it cause you weren't suppossed to take pictures):



There were also 30 some-odd iron-casts of people (I think of Gormley himself...?) on the tops of buildings along the river. It was quite beautiful and terrifying. Here's a video of that with appropriate theme music (which also was inspired by the guy doing parkour below the terrace):
